Brightspace CUA is Catholic University of America’s online course portal (also called Cardinal Learn). It’s the school’s Learning Management System powered by D2L Brightspace. In June 2023, CUA announced that Brightspace would replace its old system to better support its 4,500+ students. The university chose Brightspace for its modern, mobile-friendly design and focus on accessibility. In short, Brightspace is where students log in to see their classes, announcements, assignments, quizzes, grades and more – all in one place.
What is Cardinal Learn (Brightspace)?
Think of Brightspace (Cardinal Learn) as your virtual classroom. Each course you take has its own Brightspace page where professors can post lecture notes, slides, readings, and videos. You will use Brightspace to get important class updates and to turn in homework online. As CUA’s tech site explains, “Cardinal Learn is Catholic University’s Learning Management System, powered by Brightspace”. That means Brightspace handles everything from sharing materials to running quizzes.
D2L (the company behind Brightspace) highlights that this platform is a flexible, accessible learning system. For example, a recent press release noted that Catholic U. picked Brightspace because it provides a “highly accessible and mobile-friendly solution” to help all students succeed. In other words, Brightspace works well on laptops, tablets, and phones, and includes features (like screen-reader support and closed captioning) so everyone can use it.
Logging In and Getting Started
Getting into Brightspace is easy once you know where to go. First, open the CardinalStation portal (cardinalstation.catholic.edu) and look for the “Learning Management System” link. Clicking that will take you to the Brightspace login page (learn-brightspace.cua.edu). You can also go directly to learn-brightspace.cua.edu in your browser.
When prompted, enter your CUA Cardinal Credentials (your university username and password). These are the same login details you use for your campus email and other CatholicU systems. Once you log in, you’ll land on Brightspace’s home page. Here you should see tiles or a menu for each of your current courses. Click on a course to enter its page.
Inside a course page, you’ll find sections like Announcements, Content/Materials, Assignments, Discussions, and Grades. For example:
- Announcements: Professors post reminders and class news here.
- Content: This is where lecture slides, readings, and videos are organized.
- Assignments: Turn in papers and projects in the assignment dropboxes.
- Discussions: Chat with classmates or ask questions on a forum.
- Grades: Check your quiz scores and feedback from instructors.
These areas make it simple to stay on top of each class. Many courses also have an online calendar or checklist to show upcoming deadlines.
Features of Brightspace
Brightspace has many tools to help you learn:
- Mobile-friendly: There’s a Brightspace Pulse app you can install on your phone. It sends alerts about new grades or upcoming due dates, so you don’t miss anything. The site itself also works in any browser on phones and tablets.
- Notifications and Calendar: You can turn on email or mobile alerts for new announcements or assignment reminders. A built-in calendar shows all your course deadlines in one view.
- Accessibility: The platform is designed for easy reading and navigation. It supports features like screen readers and closed captions, which aligns with CUA’s commitment to accessible education.
- Integrated Tools: Brightspace often links to tools like Google Drive for collaboration, Zoom for virtual meetings, and video platforms (like Panopto or YuJa) for lecture recordings. These appear right inside your course.
Overall, Brightspace keeps everything organized. You can see grades and progress at any time, and the system automatically notifies you about missing or late work.
Tips and Help

- Bookmark the Links: Save the CardinalStation portal and learn-brightspace.cua.edu in your browser for quick access. Logging in through CardinalStation is especially useful on campus.
- Keep Your Password Updated: Your Cardinal Credential password protects all campus systems (email, Brightspace, Wi-Fi, etc.). Change it regularly as recommended and update it on all your devices.
- Explore Training Resources: CUA’s Technology Services website offers tutorials and guides on using Brightspace. (For example, they list training under “Cardinal Learn” on the Training page.)
- Stay Organized: Use the course calendar and notifications in Brightspace to track deadlines. Many students add all due dates to their phone’s calendar as backup.
- Get Support: If you ever run into trouble, CUA’s Tech Support has you covered. The Service Desk website (catholic.teamdynamix.com) includes a knowledge base and ticket system. You can also email techsupport@cua.edu for help. The staff is there to answer questions like login issues or how to use a Brightspace feature.
Brightspace (Cardinal Learn) is now your main hub for classes at Catholic University. With a bit of practice, you’ll quickly find it intuitive and easy to use. Remember, it’s designed to make your coursework more accessible and organized. If you keep an eye on the announcements and due dates, and use the support resources, you’ll be set for a smooth experience with your online classes. Good luck, and welcome to the Cardinal Learn community!
